A programmer in love with classic videogames
As a videogame fan since I was a kid in the early ’90s, I always wanted to be involved in the gaming industry. After some thinking I decided to leave my web developer job and I started learning Unity 4 years ago. Having a background in web programming was essential for the understanding of C#. So, the learning curve with Unity went quite smooth. When it comes to art, I have always been curious about drawing so I learned on the go, adapting to the project’s needs. Here you can see some of the projects I have been involved these years.
BATU ta BATU
During the last months I have been finishing the design and development of my first complete videogame. It is a puzzle game called BATU ta BATU in which the main goal is to move and connect colored blocks to achieve different challenges. Here you can read a bit more about the game.
Being a puzzle game based in color tiles, I decided to give it a minimalistic look to the graphics, helping the player to focus on what really matters, just connecting colors.
Development Challenges
My biggest videogame project so far, the main issue was to motivate myself from time to time to stay focused and finish it. It wasn’t easy sometimes, especially in mid development months.
Polishing the gameplay was also a big challenge. As a puzzle, the balance between difficulty and accessibility was crucial, so it took me a while to achieve this.
After the development process I started looking for different publishers. I was extremelly lucky I found 2Awesome Studio!
They included Batu ta Batu in their #indiedev partner initiative. It’s available for Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch and Steam.
At the time the Android/iOS version is in development. It will be available soon!
Project Txapape
My most recent project is a sports game in VR. It is being developed for Oculus Quest/Rift and it will be released somewhere in 2021.
The sport in the game is called “Pelota” (also known as Jai Alai) and it is a quite popular sport from the region where I come from in the north of Spain. It is basically a squash game with bigger field but using only the front and left walls. No racket is used! Players hit the ball with their bare hands!
The idea is to recreate 1 vs 1 matches with an arcade feeling but not losing a realistic touch. The game will have a history mode with many enemies to confront to and also some minigames with increasing difficulty.
